Residency
For aspiring teachers with any Bachelor's degree
West Michigan Teacher Collaborative Residency program will equip you with the skills and experience needed to become an effective educator. As part of the program, you will be employed as a Paraprofessional in a West Michigan classroom under the guidance of a mentor teacher, complete teaching-specific coursework through Grand Valley State University, and receive professional development and coaching from the West Michigan Teacher Collaborative.
You’ll receive:
- Full coverage of tuition, fees and books - paid for by West Michigan Teacher Collaborative
- A salary from the school district
- A stipend of up to $20,000
By the end of the program, you will earn your teaching certificate and receive support in securing a full-time teaching position.
Year 1
Once accepted into the Residency program, you will be enrolled at Grand Valley State University to complete teaching-specific coursework at no cost to you. If you are not currently employed by a school district, WMTC will assist in securing a Paraprofessional placement within a school district in Kent, Muskegon, or Ottawa Area ISD. If you are already employed in one of our partnering public school districts, you may continue working in your current role. As a Resident, you will be part of a supportive network of fellow Residents and participate in monthly WMTC professional development sessions.
Years 2 and 3
During years 2 and 3 of your Residency, Special Education Residents will continue their coursework at GVSU, while those pursuing Elementary and Secondary certifications will transition into Lead Teacher roles. Throughout this time, you will continue receiving support from the West Michigan Teacher Collaborative to ensure your success. You’ll stay connected with your WMTC Resident cohort from year 1 and engage with Teacher Collaborative leaders for ongoing coaching, peer support, and professional learning to help you grow as an effective educator.
At the end of year 2, Residents in high-need district areas may be eligible for consideration in WMTC’s Endorsements & Advanced Degrees track.
By the end of year 3, your Residency will be complete, and you’ll continue as a WMTC alum, ready for a successful teaching career and prepared to inspire the future of West Michigan.
Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to serve West Michigan Teacher Collaborative as a Mentor and leader, supporting and inspiring the next cohort of educators.
